When I was asked by my bank to identify myself (for was happy to oblige but I wondered how I was going to do it. How could I proattached to the details in the file the bank kept on mepassport number etc. This set me thinking.

Who are you?

It is at once the simplest and most complicated of questions. We ask it of each other all the time in different ways. Usually we want the superficialities only: place of origin, family, job.

All of these say something about you but they are not you.
